Bedmaking etiquette

Compiled by Rosemary Etim Bassey

Although making your bed may seem like an easy activity, it actually takes some skill to make it right and neatly. Here are some quick tips for making a neatly made bed: Clear the bed: The first step in making your bed, whether after waking up or after washing your linens, is to clear the bed. Make careful to remove any pillows, plush toys, comforters, etc. Remove the top sheet, any pillows, and the duvet/blanket, and set them aside.

Place the fitted sheet on: You’ll need to put the fitted sheet on the bed if it isn’t there already. To achieve this, tuck the sheet’s elasticized ends into the mattress’ corners. Make sure the sheet is snugly tucked around the mattress’s corners; you might need to elevate the mattress a little to do this. Make sure the fitted sheet is wrinkle- and crease-free as it lies on top of the mattress.

Place the top sheet on: Spread out the top sheet on top of the bottom sheet. Keep in mind that the side with the wide hem should be placed at the head of the bed, with the hem aligned with the mattress’s head. If your sheets have a pattern, you should lay them with the pattern side down. Ensure that the top sheet is laid down properly over the mattress and that it hangs equally from both sides of the bed.

Make the hospital corners: Put the end of the top sheet between the mattress and box springs at the foot of the bed to create a hospital corner. Nevertheless, don’t just stuff it in; make sure it is wrinkle-free and smooth. Grab a section of the top sheet on one side, about 16 inches (40.6 cm) from the foot of the bed. Pull it up and fold this part of sheet over the top of the mattress, so it makes a 45 degree angle from the corner of the mattress. Tuck in any sheets that are dangling below the mattress on that side of the bed while holding the folded sheet in place on top of the mattress. To get the greatest results, finish this as cleanly as you can. Let the folded sheet that was sitting on top of the mattress now fall to the ground. You can stop here if you want looser sheets. On the other hand, if you prefer your sheets to be snugly tucked, you can gently tuck the sheet’s hanging edge between the mattress and box springs, all the way along the side of the bed. Repeat on the other side of the bed.

Place duvet on top: Your blankets, comforter, or duvet can be placed on top once the top sheets have been tucked in. Ensure that the duvet is positioned equally across the bed, with an equal amount of overhang on each side.

Fold the top sheet and duvet down: Fold the top sheet’s edge at the head of the bed neatly back over the top edge of the comforter, blanket, or duvet. The blanket and sheet can be folded back together if you’re using a blanket or light comforter to hide the sheet’s hem. Duvets are frequently a touch too thick to fold.

Fluff the pillows: Before you put them on the bed, grab your pillows and give them a good fluffing. Grab a pillow from either side, squeeze the sides together, and then release it to fluff it up. Smooth out the pillow coverings then set each pillow flat at the head of the bed, to fill the area between the folded over duvet and the headboard.
