How to prevent split ends

Compiled by Rosemary Etim Bassey

When the ends of your hair become dry, brittle, and frayed, they are said to have split ends. They may resemble the end of a rope that has come undone. Split ends can be brought on by exposure to harsh weather as well as hair styling methods like blow drying, straightening, and curling. Moreover, chemical hair products are a cause of them. Split ends are typical because so many people use hair products on a daily basis. Almost everyone will experience split ends occasionally.

Split ends cannot be treated or repaired. Cutting off the ends of your hair is the only way to get rid of damaged or frayed hair ends. To maintain your hair healthy and free of split ends, prevention is essential. Split ends could be impossible to totally prevent, but you might be able to reduce how frequently they appear.

Let’s take a look at some tips and procedures for preventing split ends.

· After shampooing your hair, be gentle with it: After shampooing and conditioning, it’s crucial to take gentle care of your locks because wet hair is more susceptible to harm. Some people have a habit of using a towel to rub their hair dry, but this might harm it. Breakage of hair can result from repeated rubbing. Moreover, it may harm the cuticles of your hair, leading to split ends. To prevent breakage and damage, wipe your hair dry with a towel rather than rubbing it dry.

· Detangle your hair: It can be challenging to comb or brush tangled hair, whether it is wet or dry. Detangling your hair is essential before drying, brushing, or shaping it. An expert’s advice is to use a wide-tooth comb. The broader tooth makes it possible for the comb to slide through your hair without breaking or harming the ends.

· Hydrate your hair: Maintaining moisture in your hair is essential for avoiding split ends. Hair can get weaker due to dryness, especially at the ends, which can result in damage and split ends. Consider using a hair mask once per week to provide moisture to your hair. A deep conditioning treatment called a hair mask helps moisturize your hair and lessen frizz and dryness. A mask can lessen the possibility of hair damage, giving you smoother, shiny hair.

· Reduce the heat: Your hair might become dry and lose its natural protein structure if heated appliances are used on it frequently, especially daily. After washing your hair, if at all possible, let it air dry before styling it without the use of a curling iron, flat iron, or blow-dryer. Try to lower the heat setting if you must use heated appliances. To prevent heat damage, you can also use a heat protectant product before blow-drying or styling.

· Do not overbrush: You don’t need to brush your hair 100 times a day. That is wrong. In actuality, overbrushing your hair can lead to split ends and breakage. Instead, only style or neaten your hair using a brush. Use a detangling solution to get rid of knots if necessary, but try to avoid pulling or tugging on your hair when you brush or comb it.
