Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has pleaded with national team supporters for their patience while pledging improvements in the squad’s upcoming AFCON 2023 qualifying match against Guinea Bissau.
Nigeria suffered a humiliating defeat to Guinea Bissau, which is presently rated 118th in the world, but Iwobi assured worried fans that the result was a fluke and that the Super Eagles would be back to their best in no time.
Iwobi was addressing at the postgame news conference following the Super Eagles’ dismal loss to Guinea Bissau, when he acknowledged the supporters’ disappointment with the outcome and pledged that the team will reflect on the failure and improve their performance in the upcoming game.
“First and foremost, as players and staff, we know we have to react to this result, we will look at the game and analyse where we need to improve,” he said.
He then urged fans to continue supporting the Super Eagles despite their humiliating defeat, promising that the squad would repay their support with a better performance in their next game against Guinea Bissau.
“The only thing I can say to the fans is that they should stick by us because we gave it a hundred and ten per cent, not just for ourselves but for the nation.
“Every time we come here to represent the country we are fighting…I’m telling you now, next game, we are going to do our best to make sure we do better,” he said.
The Super Eagles will have to face the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau again, this time at Bissau, as a win over Guinea Bissau will restore Nigeria’s top spot in Group A of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.
