NNPP leads Kano assembly with 23 seats

From Clement A. Oloyede, Kano

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has won majority of seats in the Kano State House of Assembly.

The party secured 23 seats to form majority in the state’s parliament, while results of 13 state constituency elections were declared inconclusive.

Daily Trust reports that the gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections of March 18, in the state was beleaguered by widespread violence, disruption of processes and destruction of electoral materials leading to the cancellation of elections in not less than 385 polling units in 38 out of the 44 LGAs.

These cancellations greatly affected the declaration of results for the House of Assembly elections, with a senior staff of INEC in the state confirming to Daily Trust that of the over 30 results already declared, the electoral umpire might likely review some and come up with decisions on them in the next days.

He said, “Initially, the state constituency results that were declared inconclusive were 11, but as of Friday, I learnt two others already declared had been reviewed and also declared inconclusive; making it 13.

“Ajingi, Dambatta, Dawakin

Tofa, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Makoda, Takai, Ungogo, Warawa, Gabasawa and Tudunwada were the first 11 declared inconclusive.”

He, however, declined to confirm the identity of the two others said to have been reviewed.

The 23 state constituencies won by NNPP are Albasu, Bebeji, Bunkure, Dala, Dawakin Tofa, Fagge, Garko, Gwale, Kura/GarunMalam, Karaye, Kibiya, Kiru and Kano Municipal.

Others are Kumbotso, Madobi, Minjibir, Nasarawa, Rano, Rimin Gado, Tofa, Sumaila, Tarauni and Wudil.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), which suffered defeat in the gubernatorial election, emerged winner in six state constituencies: Bagwai/ Shanono, Bichi, Doguwa, Gaya, Kabo and Tsanyawa/Kunchi.

When contacted, the REC, Ambassador Abdu Zango, said the results had been uploaded on the INEC result portal and that decisions on supplementary elections where applicable would be formally communicated.

Daily Trust check on the INEC portal, however, indicated that the results of the House of Assembly elections in the state have not completely been uploaded, with some constituencies recording as low as 20 per cent upload as of Sunday afternoon.
