DSS raises fresh fear to disrupt Tinubu’s inauguration

By Idowu Isamotu

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has uncovered fresh plans by those it described as “subversive elements” to disrupt the inauguration of the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, and his vice, Kashim Shettima, billed to be held on Monday.

The secret reiterated that police

the elements were employing fake news, false alarms, skewed reportage or narratives and sensationalism that might inflame division, tension and subsequently cause violence prior to and after the exercises.

It warned residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and states where the inauguration will be held the same day not to be unruly or try to defy security protocol.

The DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, who stated this in Abuja Thursday morning, advised citizens, the media and civil society organisations to adhere strictly to security and civil protocol during the events.

“This is more so that such undesirable acts will serve no purpose other than destroying national unity and cohesion. Additionally, all unauthorised (and unaccredited) persons are warned to stay away from restricted and certain designated areas at the event venues,” Afunanya said.

He called on Nigerians to remain calm before, during and after the inauguration, adding that the DSS would continue to collaborate with the police, the military and other sister security agencies in order to tame all the threats.

When Daily Trust reminded Afunanya that the service had yet to make any arrest or name any key player in the plot despite raising the alarm in the past, he said among many roles that the service plays is advisory.

He said the media would be properly briefed when any arrest is made, urging the media not to vitiate from the essence of the reportage.
