FCT native students distance selves from protest over Uniabuja fee increment

By Abubakar Sadiq Isah

The FCT Indigenous Students Leaders Forum has distanced itself from a purported plan to embark on a protest over tuition fee increased by the management of the University of Abuja (Uniabuja).

In a statement on Thursday, the Coordinator of the forum, Comrade Yunusa Suleiman Ango, said the purported move was by unscrupulous people and a sponsored group that were masquerading as former student leaders to cause trouble in the university targeted at denting the image of the indigenous students of the FCT.

He said the forum had it on good authority that the said group of former student leaders were being led by one Gbebga Samson Ogunwole and sponsored by forces that were not happy with the unprecedented strides recorded in the last four years under the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university, Prof Abdulrasheed Na’Allah.

He said it was disheartening that such elements would want to destroy the university for selfish ends, noting that increment in tuition fee in tertiary institutions across the country was not new and wondered why that of Uniabuja should be an exception.

The statement reads in part: “Otherwise, why ignore the fact that every tertiary institution in Nigeria has increased school fees running into millions of naira. And why single out Uniabuja to the extent of planning to stage a protest in order to tag it on natives of the FCT?”

The forum, therefore, called on security agencies to monitor the activities of such groups of elements and nip their evil intentions in the bud.
