Masari commissions Katsina flyover

Outgoing Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, on Tuesday, inaugurated an intersectional flyover in the state capital, constructed at a cost of N6.4 billion. Masari, whose tenure would come to an end on May 29, said initial cost of the project was N4.33 billion. Speaking at the Government Reservation Area (GRA) roundabout, where the project is sited, the governor said additional work, as well as payment of compensation to people whose properties were affected, led to the upward review.

He said the flyover was one of three major road projects awarded, last year, in the state capital. The other two being the underpass at Kofar Kaura and the Kofar Kwaya roundabout, constructed at N2.8 billion and N2.9 billion, respectively.

He noted that the three projects would decongest vehicular traffic in the state capital.

“The state capital has been witnessing influx of people, leading to traffic congestion, and making it difficult for commuters to reach their destination on time. It is in an effort to reduce these congestions that the state government gave approval for construction of three interchanges in the state capital.”

He said his administration, in the last eight years, awarded 22 major road construction projects, totalling 590 kilometres, at a cost of N44.34 billion, and that all of them have been completed and are being put to use.

Masari added that 17 other roads were rehabilitated under his watch “to address their deplorable condition and reduce traffic accidents.”

Masari said his administration also upgraded and rehabilitated several roads that were 454 kilometres long at a cost of N20.56 billion.

He said both the state government and 34 councils collectively constructed roads that were 95.29 kilometres long, adding that 83.3 kilometres of these have been completed and put to use.

Masari further appreciated the people of Katsina State for re-electing the All Progressives Congress (APC) to continue with the legacies of the present administration and even surpass it.

Governor Masari assured the residents that his successor, Dr Dikko Umar Radda will build on such legacies.

The epoch making commissioning ceremony was well attended by the leaders and people of Katsina state, including the ntwo emirs of Katsina and Daura, the DGNIA, Amb. Ahmad Rufa’i Abubabakar and former gover of the state, Barrister Ibrahim Shehu Shema, amongst others.

The Masari administration with its Urban Renewal projects had done much in terms of developmental projects despite its lean purse due to the challenges occasioned by COVID-19, economic recession, and the fall in crude oil prices.

One of the landmark projects in Katsina is the GRA flyover and its six lanes interchange. At the beginning of this project, some nay-sayers were of the opinion that it will not be completed before the end of the Masari administration. They were however without some basis for their argument, considering what transpired in other places where such gigantic projects have taken place, in which the works were elongated and contracts reviewed and reviewed again.

On his part, governor Masari had promised to ensure the completion of the project, because he was pretty sure, based on his determination and personal conviction that the project would be completed within the stipulated time, and that promised has been kept.

When it came on board in 2015, the Masari administration inherited a total of 13 uncompleted road projects from the immediate past Shema administration, all the projects were duly completed by the Masari administration despite the lean purse of the government. The projects inherited are; additional works at Marabar Sayaya-Sayaya-Mazoji Road, additional work at Eka-KadandaniKuraye-Yargamji Road, T/Bala-Kandarawa village access road, Rehabilitation and Asphalting of Sandamu-Baure-Babban Mutum road excluding Zango-Rogogo spur, construction of Dankaba-AbdallawaJifatu road, dualization of Funtua Township roads, Dualisation of Nagogo Road, construction of Nagogo-Yahaya Madaki road, construction of Funtua BCGA Dry Port Dual Carriageway, construction of Unguwar Lalle-Unguwar Waziri road, construction of Rural Feeder Road Phase II, construction of Batagarawa-Tashar Bala-Lambar RimiTsagero road, construction of DandumeKadisau-Daudawa-Sheme road.

The administration constructed a total of 20 roads spread across the three (3)

Senatorial Zones and rehabilitate another Sixteen (16) roads from 2015-2022. In Funtua Zone a total of six (6) new Roads were constructed, while eight (8) roads were rehabilitated. In Katsina Zone a total of seven (7) new roads were constructed, while three (3) were rehabilitated. In Daura Zone a total of seven (7) new roads were constructed, while five (5) were rehabilitated.

In addition to that, the state government’s agency in charge of road maintenance, Katsina State Roads Maintenance Agency (KASROMA) undertook the rehabilitation and construction of roads under its direct labor programs, these include pavement reconstruction and sub-soil drainage, pothole patching and reclaiming of washouts.

The contracts executed under direct labor by KASROMA includes, Mani–Tsagero– Katsina Road at the cost of N53,355,300.00.
