Easy skincare tips for men

Compiled by Rosemary Etim Bassey

Men have always kept their skin care routines simple. Yet, as more men seek healthier, younger-looking skin, now is an excellent moment for men to evaluate their skin care routine and learn more about how to care for their skin.

Firstly, it’s critical for everyone, especially guys, to recognise and comprehend their skin type; Normal skin is clear and not sensitive, dry skin is flaky, itchy, or scratchy, oily skin is glossy and greasy, and combination skin is dry in some areas and oily in others. Sensitive skin may sting or burn after product usage.

Knowing your skin type can help you choose the best skin care products for you and learn how to take care of your skin. Here are some suggestions to help men develop good skin care routines:

Read product labels and ingredients:

Your skin type will determine the skin care products you select. Look for cleansers and moisturisers that say oil free or noncomedogenic if you have acne-prone skin because these products won’t clog your pores. Choose gentle, “fragrancefree” products if you have sensitive skin because those with fragrances might irritate and dry out the skin. But, be wary of items with the term “unscented,” since many of these still contain irritating perfumes that can conceal other scents.

Wash your face daily and after exercise:

Washing your face with conventional bar soap and hot water might dry out your skin because regular bar soap frequently contains harsh substances. Instead, use lukewarm water and a gentle facial cleanser.

Check your shaving technique: Multi-blade razors may operate too well or shave too closely to the skin for certain men. Use a single- or double-blade razor and avoid stretching your skin taut when shaving if you frequently get razor bumps, burns, or ingrown hairs. Wet your skin and hair to make it softer before shaving. Shave in the direction of the growth of the hair while using a moisturising shaving cream. To reduce irritation, rinse your face after each razor stroke, and swap out your blade every five to seven passes.

Use moisturiser: In order to prevent fine wrinkles from appearing and to make your skin appear younger and more vibrant, moisturisers operate by holding water in your skin. Apply moisturiser to your face and body as soon as possible after a shower, bath, or shaving, while the skin is still damp, for optimal benefits.

Check your face regularly: Itchy, bleeding, or changingcolor new patches or moles are frequently early indicators of skin cancer. Get a dermatologist appointment if you discover any questionable spots. Melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, is more common in men over 50 than in the overall population. Skin cancer is incredibly treatable, though, if it is discovered early.

Sunscreen is a must: Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, including your scalp, ears, neck, and lips, before stepping outside to help prevent UV damage that can cause wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it every two hours or right away after swimming or perspiring for the best protection. Aside from wearing sun-protective clothes like a light, longsleeved shirt, trousers, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective sunglasses when appropriate, you can also protect your skin by finding shade. Choose clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor
